Swordsman of the Queen

A strip from The Hornet

See The Hornet issues 26 - 36.

Writer:- The Hornet editorial team. Artist:- Not known.

Main cast:- Dick Hazelrigg; Lord Ainsworth.

Time period:- 1558 (16th Century).

This month we step back in time to the court of Queen Elizabeth I, for a sword swashbuckling series. The year is 1558 and Queen Mary Tudor has died, to be replaced by her step-sister Elizabeth I. But there are others who would claim the throne of England. In this uncertain period the young Queen will require all the help she can muster. Duels between the champions of Kings and Queens and other powerful players were common at this time. It is therefore important that the Queen's champion swordsman is able to defeat any who would challenger Her Majesty.

Lord Ainsworth hopes that his son Rupert will be that champion swordsman. But it is not to be. Lord Ainsworth recognises that he too, is too old to be the Queen's champion. A new applicant must be found. Enter Dick Hazelrigg. Will he have the skills to become Her Majesty's champion and can he stop the plot that will depose Queen Elizabeth I?

A very lively series from the early days of the Hornet comic. Artist is unknown at this time.

The following adventures of Hazelrigg are from issues 26; 27; 32; 34 & 36.

Apologies for the state of some of the scans. Some of the Hornet issues I scanned are in poor condition.
