Guard Story No.11 - - The Tarmac Merchants. In which two unpleasant conmen come to the attention of the police and the Guard. Much to the conmen's discomfort!

This story is a picture driven adventure and has been put together in the style of a silent film, with no words (mostly). I found though that I had to resort to story title boards as used in silent films, so to convey information to the reader. As I'm no expert in producing comics, I was concerned that if there was no guidance in the form of words, the pictures might not tell the story. Thus leading to confusion on the reader's part as to what was going on. The artist's job in this type of story is crucial, in that he or she has to show the necessary expressions on the characters faces for example, thus providing the correct information to the reader so they can follow the story. This isn't always easy to do using Lego minifigures, (although I did achieve this on several occasions in this story successfully, according to my friends), thus the use of title boards where necessary.

I did run the story past a few friends (all of whom don't read comics), and they all followed the story. Even mentioning several things that I hadn't picked up on. So it is true that people do see things that hadn't occured to other people. So I must have achieved my aim.

The idea for this story is based on a confidence trick played by some rogue cowboy builders in the Yorkshire, England region about six or seven years ago. They offered to tarmac people's driveways for reasonable fee. Did a very shoddy job, took the money and disappeared, leaving their business card behind. A few days later the owner of the driveway would notice that their new tarmaced drive had broken up. They then rang the number on the business card and got through to a pre-recorded message. Which said, "You've been f****d." (Charming!) This story has stuck in my mind all these years, just waiting for the right opportunity to fit it into a story.
