This Halloween story was produced in two parts. Work started on the story back in August and finally finished in early October. A two week holiday period and other events slowed production of this story down.
The incorrect spelling of The Guard on the bottom of page one is deliberate and echoes Sergeant Tallon's view of the platoon's poor shooting skills.
The radio call sign on page three (Broadsword calling Danny Boy), is a radio call sign taken from the famous WW2 film Where Eagles Dare.
The explosion on page nine was produced by using transparent orange parts from the Chi Laval character, from the Chima range and then shining a red light on the ‘model’ from behind. I then took loads of shots using different camera modes and lighting conditions and then chose the best shot.
I used a mixture of Lego and wargaming scenery to produce woods and fields. The Lego fields and woods I built for this story are poor. I’ll have to work on producing something better the next time round. (As far as my Lego creations go, I’m obviously a city and town builder, not a countryside builder). The use of wargaming tiles and rubberised hedges and trees does work better than the Lego equivalent and also looks better on the page.
So now we know how Topham got his scar. Readers will have noticed as they read the story that there is no scar on the younger Topham's face. And no, he won't be turning into a werewolf. Sorry.
What happened to Privates Mack and Coffin? This isn't known at the present time. Soldiers did tend to just disappear in wars. Possibly they died, or were captured or deserted and so on.
I think this year’s Halloween story will be the last for a while. I want to try another idea for next year.
Overall, I’m happy with some parts of this story, but not with the overall adventure. The story isn’t the problem, more the ‘art’ side and Lego building of the countryside. It’s probably a story I should have planned more in advance. And I suppose having a long gap between parts one and two obviously didn’t help.
