Time period:- Second World War, on an island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

A small group of British Prisoner of War soldiers escape from a Japanese ship and manage to reach a deserted island. But it's not long before Japanese forces are on their trail. Fortunately, Sapper George "Gadget" Gubbins is one of the soldiers. And each episode, he comes up with makeshift inventions which helps the British to fight off the Japanese.

Just for a change the authority figure Sergeant-Major Block isn't at log heads with our hero. (So its a bit strange that he's called Block!) Rather he recognises Gubbin's skills and relies on "Gadget" to come up with inventions to help save the day. The problems instead come from Private Meech, a surly, bad-tempered soldier, who thinks he knows better than anyone else, but through his careless creates many a headache for the small party of British soldiers. As the series reaches its conclusion the question is can the British hold out until they are rescued or will the Japanese win in the end?
